A new “grain corridor”, training of Ukrainian pilots and military aid are the main topics of today’s negotiations in Bucharest.
On Tuesday, September 10, Vladimir Zelensky arrived in Bucharest on his first official visit to Romania. At the Cotroceni Palace he met his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis, and at the Victoria Palace with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku.
According to Romanian media, Zelensky was personally invited to Bucharest by Iohannis to show his support for Ukraine, as well as to discuss new projects at the highest level. However, the arrival of the Ukrainian president in Romania was not without scandal – Zelensky’s speech before the country’s parliament was canceled.
Context of the visit
The visit of the Ukrainian President to Bucharest took place in the context of the fact that at the beginning of September, at least three Russian suicide bombs fell on Romanian territory.
Following these incidents, the country’s Ministry of Defense announced that it was moving air defense forces to the border of the Odessa region, where the Russians are actively attacking grain complexes, and adding new observation posts. of the military and patrols in the area.
The Romanian army also built two bomb shelters in the border village of Plauru, just a few hundred meters from the Ukrainian city of Izmail. In addition, residents of these Romanian territories began to receive notifications on their mobile phones about the approach of drones from the Russian Federation.
Along with Russian drones, the United States also sent four more F-16 fighter jets and about 100 troops to Romania.
Basic agreements
Now the President in Bucharest has agreed Ukrainian pilots will study there on the F-16.
“A pilot training center is being built. We discussed how to speed up such training and agreed that Ukrainian pilots will be included in the “first” wave of training,” Zelensky said after a meeting with his Romanian counterpart .
In addition, the President of Ukraine announced creating a new “grain corridor” through Moldova and Romania.
“We discussed with the president our possible joint action to protect not only the ports, but the entire region of Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, our people… Separately, I would like to note one of the strategic directions of our cooperation. In the triangle Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, we are able to create a very strong basis for the development of not only our countries and peoples, but also the whole of Europe,” said the Ukrainian head of state.
“And the “grain corridor” from Ukraine to Moldova and Romania will soon start working. And this is an example of how much we can do together. That will be very important not only for us, but for Europe and the world as a whole,” he added the president.
A bilateral agreement was also signed Declaration of Security Cooperationin particular, in the Black Sea region, support for the Ukrainian peace plan, expansion of economic and logistics cooperation, transport links, simplification of border crossing procedures and opening of new border checkpoints.
Later in his evening speech, Zelensky said Ukraine could expect more military aid from Romania. In particular, we are talking about shells and strengthening air defense.
“Our strategic relationship is a new force for the entire Black Sea region. If we manage to implement everything we have planned today and what our teams will do, a new source of economic and safe development will appear in this part of Europe… Fortunately today we have strengthened our defense,” the president added.
Performance disruption
Let’s remember that today the President of Ukraine had a planned speech in the Parliament of Romania, but it was canceled.
“The joint meeting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, scheduled for today at 17:00, dedicated to the reception of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, has been canceled,” the country’s parliament officially reported when does not provide further explanations.
According to journalists, the reason for the cancellation of the speech could be provocations from Romanian deputies with pro-Russian sympathies. In particular, the senator and admirer of Putin Diana Shoshoake threatened to stage a “show” during Zelensky’s speech.
Later, at a press conference, the President of Romania was asked why his Ukrainian counterpart was not speaking in parliament. To which he replied that everything was agreed and appropriate decisions were made.
In turn, Zelensky jokingly complained why he was not asked about the canceled speech. The head of state joked that “he has no shortage of words.” In addition, he added that next time he would definitely be happy to speak in the Romanian Parliament.
