She identified the key reasons for gender differences in the labor market, according to the Nobel Committee website. – […] Claudia Goldin presented the first comprehensive report on women’s earnings and labor market participation over the centuries. Her research reveals the reasons for change, as well as the main sources of the persistent gender gap.
The scientist studied US archives and collected data for more than 200 years to determine how and why differences in the income of representatives of different articles changed over time.
In particular, the economist found that in the 20th century, the level of education among women increased significantly and now in developed countries it is much higher than that of men.
According to her research, the participation of married women decreased with the transition from agrarian to industrial societies in the early 19th century, but then began to increase with the growth of the service sector in the early 20th century. Goldin explained this pattern as a result of structural changes and the evolution of social norms regarding women’s responsibilities in the home and family.
Claudia Goldin also concluded that access to birth control pills played an important role in accelerating these revolutionary changes, offering new opportunities for career planning.
Goldin is an economic historian and specialist in labor economics and gender issues, and a professor at Harvard University. In 1990, Goldin became the first woman to join Harvard’s economics department. She became the third woman laureate of the Nobel Prize in Economics in its history.
