The surprise attack began around 6.30 and half an hour later 5,000 rockets and ammunition were fired into Israeli territory. Cities in southern and central Israel came under attack, and sirens sounded in many cities and villages. There was a direct hit on a house in Tel Aviv and a building in Ashkelon. At least one person was killed and 15 were injured. This was reported by Reuters, AP News and the Times of Israel.
There are also reports of Palestinian military infiltration into Israeli territory, breaking through on paragliders and pickup trucks. Armed clashes are taking place in the south of the country.
The armed wing of the Hamas movement announced the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Defense Minister ordered an urgent call-up of reservists. The Israel Defense Forces said it was moving to a “state of military readiness” and was ready to launch retaliatory strikes.
