The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi for her struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all, it said.
This year, the winner of the nomination was chosen from 351 applicants – 259 people and 92 organizations. This is the second highest figure in the history of the award. A record number of 376 candidates were submitted in 2016. For eight years the number of nominees has exceeded 300.
Likely 2023 nominees included Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and jailed Russian politician Alexei Navalny. Both were mentioned as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second year in a row.
