The initiator was Republican Matt Gaetz: McCarthy allegedly compromised with Biden and helped him avoid a shutdown. He is also accused of agreeing with the White House to introduce a bill to help Ukraine.
This is the first time in US history that members of the House of Representatives have voted to resign the speaker. The last time such an attempt was made was in 1910.
216 members of the chamber voted for the resolution, 210 were against it. Eight Republicans, led by Matt Gaetz, who initiated the vote, spoke in favor of McCarthy’s resignation.
On September 30, McCarthy managed to reach an agreement with the Democrats and pass a budget resolution to finance federal spending for 45 days, which helped avoid a government shutdown. Therefore, the compromise Goetz submitted a petition for the resignation of his fellow party member.
Republican Party representative from North Carolina Patrick McHenry has been appointed interim speaker of the lower house of the US Congress.
A similar procedure took place in the US House of Representatives only once – in March 1910, writes The New York Times. Then during the vote, Republicans tried to remove Speaker Joseph Kenon, known as “Uncle Joe,” from office. He managed to retain his post, but his position in the chamber weakened.
The White House reacted to the resignation.
Because the pressing issues facing our country cannot wait, President Biden hopes the House will quickly select a speaker, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing.
The American people deserve leaders who put issues that affect American life at the forefront. And President Joe Biden has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to work with both parties in Congress on behalf of the American people, Jean-Pierre said.
Meanwhile, the US House of Representatives went into recess for a week after McCarthy’s resignation.
Republicans will return to work on Tuesday to discuss nominees for speaker, with an election possible on Wednesday, lawmakers involved in the discussion said.
The process will be organized by the acting speaker.
All this will happen against a backdrop of uncertainty regarding US government funding following the adoption of the interim budget. And in the absence of decisions on further assistance to Kyiv.
McCarthy said he would not seek the position. Republican Matt Gaetz, through whose efforts a fellow party member was removed from office, has no such ambitions.
There are no clear favorites in the fight for the third most important position in the American government yet.
