The European Union is preparing to announce the start of accession negotiations for Ukraine. The media recognized the rules.
The EU is likely to announce the start of Ukraine’s membership negotiations before December this year. This was reported by Politico, citing three diplomatic sources.
As is known, the European Commission will publish a report on how well Ukraine and other applicants for EU membership fulfill the relevant conditions. According to a European official, this will happen in November.
As the publication writes, after this the European Commission will make a statement, after which “it will be very difficult for the member states not to say: “Let’s start negotiations” on the accession of Ukraine.
The source said that “the political pressure around this (negotiations on Ukraine’s accession – edit.) would be too strong for individual member countries to resist. The working assumption is that the European Council will decide before December to start negotiations.”
The publication states that until this time Ukraine may not fully implement the seven recommendations of the European Commission, on which the start of accession negotiations depends. Therefore, EU leaders can give a political signal of agreement to the negotiations, even if their legal framework is not yet finalized.
As another diplomat told the publication, “the goal is to reach a political agreement in December with the start of negotiations.” He added that a legal decision on the negotiations with Ukraine could be made at the beginning of 2024.
We remind you that, according to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU may begin this fall or early next year.
Earlier, the European Commission announced that there is a real hope of starting negotiations on the accession of Ukraine to the EU in the winter.
