The leader of this political force, Robert Fico, who advocated ending military assistance to Ukraine, said that his position has not changed. Fico, who was prime minister, said he was waiting for a mandate that would allow him to form a new government because the plans were “clear.” This was reported by The Guardian.
After winning the elections, Fico already managed to get into an international scandal by making a statement about Ukraine. According to him, “people in Slovakia have bigger problems than Ukraine.” He stated that the Smer-SD political force “does not change its opinion about its readiness to help Ukraine in a humanitarian way.” But his government will not provide military assistance.
We are ready to help restore the state. But you know our opinion regarding the armament of Ukraine,” Fico said.
According to experts, Slovakia may in the future join Hungary and support the government of Viktor Orban in undermining the consensus in the European Union on supporting Ukraine in the war with the Russian Federation.
Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Kremlin loyalist, congratulated Robert Fico on his party’s election victory.
It’s always a pleasure to work with patriots. And I look forward to this cooperation,” he wrote on Twitter.
Recall that former national security adviser to former US President Donald Trump John Bolton said that if Trump wins the presidential election, the United States may withdraw from NATO.
