Of the 21 newly appointed cardinals, 18 will be able to vote as “cardinal electors” in the next conclave.
Pope Francis appointed 21 new cardinals on Saturday, September 30, Euronews reports.
“Pope Francis today elevated 21 clerics from far-flung parts of the world to the rank of cardinal, saying diversity is essential to the future of the Catholic Church,” the statement said.
It has been noted that during his pontificate, Francis seeks to create a more inclusive, universal Church, which looks not only to European countries, but also to clergy in Africa, Asia and Latin America when filling the highest rank of the Church.
The selection of new cardinals is closely watched as an indicator of the Church’s priorities and position. The current ceremony, known as a consistory, is the ninth since Francis was elected pope in 2013.
18 of the 21 newly minted cardinals are under the age of 80 and thus are now eligible to vote as “cardinal electors” at the next conclave where a new pope will be elected.
It was previously reported that the Pope prayed with Ukrainian youth. The Pontiff received young men and women from Ukraine, who told him about the war and the situation in the state.
