The Federal Security Service intends to expand its own capabilities for monitoring Internet users. The intelligence service of the aggressor country is likely to support amendments to the bill of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, which will expand its tools of digital authoritarianism to monitor users of the Russian Internet, banking and telecommunications companies. This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Efforts by Russian intelligence agencies to gain control of large companies’ databases are likely part of an attempt to tighten surveillance measures over the population of Russia and occupied Ukraine, experts say. Also, thanks to access to data, the FSB wants to disguise its operations.
ISW believes that the FSB’s potential new access to private company databases could affect information security in other countries that use the services of the Russian Open Data Association. Because back in August, Russian authorities tried to force Yandex to provide the FSB with data from international users.
Let us recall that in the self-proclaimed DPR, the Russian authorities introduced military censorship of postal items and messages transmitted via telecommunications systems, as well as control over telephone conversations.
