The Institute of National Remembrance of Poland is demanding an immediate investigation into whether Gunka is wanted for crimes against Poles.

Poland has begun examining whether 98-year-old Galician SS veteran Jaroslav Gunka is wanted for the purpose of his further extradition if the answer is positive, Politico reports.

Poland’s Education Minister Przemyslaw Czarnek said he “took action” to extradite the Ukrainian Nazi veteran who was honored by Canadian parliamentarians last week.

“Due to the disturbing events in the Canadian parliament related to the honoring in the presence of President Zelensky of a member of the criminal Nazi formation SS Galicia, I took steps for the possible extradition of this person to Poland,” wrote Czarnek on X/Twitter.

In a letter to the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland, a body that researches and investigates past crimes against Poles, Czarnek requested an “urgent review” of whether Gunka was wanted for crimes against Poles of Jewish origin, adding that “indications of such crimes are grounds for contacting Canada for a request for his extradition.”

We remind you that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized on behalf of the state for inviting a veteran of the SS Galicia division to parliament during Vladimir Zelensky’s speech. The previous day, the speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Anthony Rota, resigned, inviting the veteran of the SS Galician division to the parliament and introducing him as a veteran of the Second World War who fought against the Russians.

Veteran of the SS Galicia. Big scandal in Canada

The SS Galicia division was created by German troops from Ukrainians to fight the Red Army in 1943.

The Nuremberg Trials and the Deschênes Commission, established in Canada in the 1980s, the involvement of members of the division in war crimes has not been confirmed.
However, some countries, especially Israel and Poland, accuse it of punitive Wehrmacht operations against Poles and Jews. Against the backdrop of the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, Russian propaganda often uses similar rhetoric about division.
