The weapons are needed both for Ukraine and to replenish the own reserves of the Alliance member countries, which transferred their weapons to Kyiv.
US Ambassador to NATO Julian Smith said that the Alliance will increase the production of ammunition for Ukraine and for NATO member countries that transfer a large part of their weapons to Ukraine. The Voice of America reported this on Wednesday, September 27.
“We saw cases where NATO allies gave the Ukrainians everything they could bilaterally, which created some shortages in their own supplies. So NATO started working on what we call a plan of defense manufacturing action, focused on ammunition shortages for both Ukrainians and some NATO members who aided Ukraine, leading to their own shortages,” Smith said.
The alliance is focused on strengthening ties with the private sector to try to speed up defense production lines, he said.
The US Ambassador to NATO emphasized that Ukraine’s support of all 31 NATO allies is “iron and it does not fade.”
“The question we are hearing at the NATO negotiating table is what more can we do for our friends in Ukraine. We share a commitment to support Ukraine. We understand what is at stake. Ukraine is not just defending its territory. Ukraine is defending the values, which we are all here to protect,” said Julian Smith.
According to him, none of the allies proposed to reduce aid to Ukraine.
Julian Smith also mentioned the important role of the European Union in helping Ukraine.
It was earlier reported that Britain ordered an additional batch of ammunition against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.
The EP approved the defense procurement mechanism
