The representative to a human rights body is inconsistent with Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the US State Department said.
Russia is seeking to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council after being expelled following its massive invasion of Ukraine. The United States has clearly defined its position on Russia’s approach to human rights. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this in a briefing.
“We saw Russia commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine. We made it clear that there should be accountability for the crimes they committed, and therefore, of course, I believe that the representation in a human rights body human rights are inconsistent with their actions in Ukraine,” he said.
Currently, on the UN website, Russia is listed as a candidate for the election of members of the Human Rights Council for 2024-2026. These will take place on October 10.
According to the position letter, the Russian Federation considers the Human Rights Council as “a key body in the UN system.”
According to UN diplomats interviewed by the BBC, Russia is conducting an “aggressive campaign” offering grain and weapons to small countries in exchange for their votes. Therefore, they do not rule out that the Russian Federation may return to the Council.
As you know, on April 7, 2022, the UN General Assembly suspended Russia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council due to the full-scale war in Ukraine. The corresponding decision was supported by 93 countries, 24 states voted against and 58 abstained.
