The Committee on Foreign Affairs decided that “the use of the Soviet-era Kaliningrad in the Estonian language should be abandoned in favor of the historical name.
The Estonian parliament has proposed to consider the possibility of using the name Königsberg instead of Kaliningrad in the Estonian language, Radio Liberty reports.
According to the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, the committee decided that “the Soviet-era use of Kaliningrad in the Estonian language should be abandoned and the historical name Königsberg should be used instead.”
In addition, committee members noted at the meeting that for the city of Kingissepa in Russia it is advisable to use the earlier name Yamburg or Yaama.
The Foreign Affairs Commission discussed the name issue in connection with the parliamentary resolution “Proposal of the Government of the Republic to use the historical, Estonian name of Königsberg”, submitted by the faction of the Estonian Conservative People’s Party, which the commission will continue to discuss in October.
We remind you that in Poland the names of the city of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation have been officially approved and changed. The change took effect on May 9. Now the city is called Krulevets, and the region is Krulevetskaya.
Later, Latvia’s expert language commission recommended renaming Kaliningrad with the Baltic name Karalyauchi or the historical German name Königsberg.
Now Kralovec. The Czech Republic annexed Kaliningrad
