The White House may decide to move a “limited” modification of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine. This is what the former commander of the US Army in Europe, General Ben Hodges, said in a commentary in Newsweek.
According to him, its use is almost “useless” for Ukraine in the context of attacks on large targets in the temporarily occupied Crimea, as it refers to “cluster munitions with a shorter range.”
“They will be useful for attacking some targets, but less effective for destroying large Russian objects in Crimea,” he explained.
Hodges is confident that the missiles will still be transferred to their “limited” version and added that the Biden Administration has concerns that Ukraine will try to attack Russia with these missiles. In their normal configuration, ATACMS can fire at a distance of up to 300 km. The Himars MLRS, previously supplied by the United States to Ukraine, cannot overcome such a distance.
“Biden still seems wary of opening up the possibility of long-range precision strikes that Ukraine could use to strike targets inside the Russian Federation,” Hodges said.
At the same time, he is confident that Washington’s positive decision regarding the transfer of ATACMS to Ukraine can push the Bundestag to take similar measures – as is known, Germany is still hesitant about the transfer of Taurus missiles .
Hodges emphasized that the UK and France had previously supported the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the transfer of long-range Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles and had not regretted it.
He concluded, one way or another, that Ukraine’s acceptance of ATACMS would make Crimea a bad location for Russian troops.
Let us remind you that the representative of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Yuriy Ignat, is confident that Ukraine will receive long-range ATACMS missiles.
According to media reports, the United States intends to transfer “a small number of ATACMS missiles” to Ukraine.
In addition, the publication wrote that the White House is close to a decision to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a version of ATACMS armed with cluster bombs, instead of a single warhead.
