Every day Russia “makes a mockery of the UN” by continuing its illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Australian Foreign Minister stressed.

The Australian government has backed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s demand to strip Russia of its veto power at the UN Security Council. Bloomberg reported this in connection with the head of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong.

“We must demand more from the permanent members, including limits on the use of the veto. Russia makes a mockery of the UN every day as it continues its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine,” he said in a speech at the UN General Assembly.

He proposed providing more permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America and Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan. According to him, Australia is applying for a seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-2030.

Let’s recall that on September 20, Zelensky, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, said that the UN General Assembly should be given a real opportunity to override the veto of a member of the Security Council.
