Andrei Medvedev believes that he will soon be extradited to Ukraine and that it is safer to return to Russia.
The Norwegian police detained, while trying to illegally cross the border of the Russian Federation, the former commander of one of the branches of the Russian PMC Wagner, Andrei Medvedev, who previously fled to Norway and sought asylum there, was detained by the Norwegian police while attempting to illegally cross the border with the Russian Federation. The Barents Observer reported this yesterday.
It is indicated that the man was detained yesterday evening in the village of Grense Jakobselv on the Russian border, when he tried to cross the border in the dark and reach the Kola Peninsula.
“We can confirm that the man is in custody,” said Finnmark police operational commander Martin Marum, adding that “the arrest was not dramatic.”
Crossing the land border in this area is illegal.
Bear’s attempted border crossing took place just hours after he met a Barents Observer journalist in the center of Kirkenes. The 27-year-old former Wagner fighter said he intended to cross the border and was looking for someone to give him a lift.
As the publication wrote, “he looked worried, but at the same time calm and determined.” Medvedev explained that he believed he was about to be extradited to Ukraine and that returning to Russia was a safer alternative.
Shortly after the conversation, he apparently reached Grense Jakobselv, 50 km from Kirkenes. At this point, only a small river separates Norway and Russia.
At the same time, it is not clear how Medvedev got to this place, because the transport was going to the border river.
As you know, in January 2023, Andrei Medvedev illegally crossed the border, asking for political asylum in Norway. He said he was ready to testify against the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
