Complying with the complex criteria for membership in the European Union usually takes more than ten years.
The European Commission is preparing to recommend the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. European leaders must then sign off on the recommendation at a December summit. Bloomberg reported this, citing sources.
It was noted that next month the European Commission recommends starting a multi-year process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU. However, the EU executive may insist on progress in areas such as corruption as intermediate measures.
After that, the European Commission will issue a recommendation that must be signed by EU leaders. This is likely to happen in December.
Ukraine will then begin the long process of completing reforms and aligning standards in more than 30 areas with EU law, including the rule of law and the economy.
According to the publication, there is no quick way to speed up the implementation of the complex membership criteria, which usually takes at least ten years.
The material says the EU’s continued enlargement comes at a time when the bloc of 27 states is seeking to keep Eastern European countries in the bloc to prevent them joining Russia or China.
Recall that the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said she was surprised by the progress Ukraine has made in implementing the reforms needed for its bid to join the EU.
Earlier it was reported that the European Union planned to hold a meeting of foreign ministers of member countries in Kyiv.
