The WHO Regional Office for Europe has declared the polio outbreak in Ukraine, discovered in October 2021, officially over. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
This was achieved through the collaboration of the Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF, Rotary International and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“The comprehensive outbreak response strategy, initiated by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in December 2021, has successfully stopped the transmission of the virus and prevented its spread to other countries,” the Ministry of Health said.
According to the head of the WHO Office in Ukraine, Jarno Habicht, stopping the spread of poliovirus in the context of an ongoing war is an extraordinary achievement.
As Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Lyashko noted, the outbreak has been eliminated, but work to prevent polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases continues in Ukraine.
“As long as polio remains a global threat, Ukraine will remain vulnerable, which is why the Ministry of Health continues to strengthen vigilance against vaccine-preventable diseases and works to expand routine vaccination coverage in across the country to protect every child,” he said.
