The Austrian Chancellor proposed to create a so -called “preparatory space” for Ukraine to reach EU standards.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Sunday, June 5, called for an intermediate stage between cooperation and full membership in the European Union for Ukraine and Moldova. This was reported by Reuters.
In particular, Nehammer proposed the creation of so -called “preparatory space” for Ukraine to meet EU standards similar to the European Economic Area and the European Free Trade Agreement.
“We are united by one goal, we all want a strong, independent and economically successful Ukraine. It is currently fighting for its political and territorial survival. All our efforts are primarily aimed at ending the war “Russia’s aggression. At this stage, fast EU accession may not be an important issue anyway,” Nehammer said.
He stressed that in the current debate about Ukraine’s membership in the EU, it is necessary to get rid of emotions, because a quick entry is unrealistic.
“We must create a European preparatory space that will allow step by step to strengthen cooperation with the EU and better adapt to European standards,” Nehammer added.
Recall that the heads of EU countries plan to consider an application for membership of Ukraine in June.
Some European Union countries are opposed to granting candidate status to Ukraine under the accelerated procedure.
