The Polish leader said his country wants to help Ukraine, but must defend the interests of its own farmers.
Polish President Andrzej Duda compared Ukraine to a drowning man who can harm the person who saves him. He made this statement on Tuesday, September 19, at a briefing for the Polish media in New York, commenting on the situation with the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain, reports Polskie Radio.
Therefore, Duda said that “everyone who participated in the rescue of a drowning person knows that he is very dangerous, that he can be pulled into the deep.”
“Do we have to act in a way to protect ourselves from the harm of a drowning person? Of course, we must act in a way to protect ourselves from the harm of a drowning person, because if the drowning person hurts and drowns us, then he will not get help. Therefore, we must protect our interests, and we will do it effectively and decisively,” he said.
Duda noted that Poland did not close its borders to Ukrainian grain, but established transport corridors where it now allegedly produces twice as much grain as in February of this year. He also added that his country wants to help Ukraine, but it must defend the interests of its own farmers.
Speaking about the case that Ukraine filed with the World Trade Organization, Duda said that Poland will explain the situation to the court.
“I understand that there are business circles in Ukraine who want to sell grain as quickly as possible at the lowest possible price. We must protect ourselves from this. This is our clear responsibility. There is a chance of interests here . If Ukraine goes to court, we will explain the situation.” . It would be good for Ukraine to remember that it receives help from us, and remember that we are a transit country only for Ukraine,” said Duda.
According to him, Poland is helping Ukraine to transfer food to other markets, and is also working with Lithuania to simplify procedures and export through the port of Klaipeda.
The President of Poland also noted that, despite his plans, he could not meet with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky “for organizational reasons” – a delay in the schedule of the leaders’ speeches at the UN General Assembly, but does not exclude the meeting. will happen later.
As reported, Ukraine filed a case at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against three Eastern European countries that unilaterally extended the grain import ban, despite the fact that the European Commission lifted the restrictive measures . At the same time, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia refused to work on the EC coordination platform on Ukrainian grain because of Ukraine’s possible filing of a claim at the WTO.
