Previously, the President of Brazil refused to take a clear position on Russia’s war against Ukraine and did not agree to the transfer of weapons to Kyiv.
On Wednesday, September 20, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This was reported by The Guardian, citing two sources in the Brazilian government.
“Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday in New York,” the material said.
The publication wrote that Lula has undermined some Western leaders who support Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression with his refusal to take a clear position on the war. The President of Brazil tried to position himself as a potential mediator of peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, while arguing that “some countries only need to remain neutral if there is a desire to agree to peace.”
Let’s remember that Lula da Silva previously said that he intends to bring the presidents of Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table at the UN General Assembly.
On the sidelines of the G20 meeting in New Delhi, Lula also said that the President of Russia will be invited to the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro in 2024. And the President of Brazil himself is planning to attend the meeting of the BRICS bloc, which will be held in Russia before the meeting in Rio.
