For the first time in its 16 years of existence, the Human Rights Council received a mandate to verify compliance with the rights of a member state with permanent seats on the Security Council.
The human rights situation in the Russian Federation has worsened significantly since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This was reported by Reuters in connection with a copy of the UN report.
“Russian authorities have severely restricted freedom of association, peaceful assembly and expression, both online and offline, and fundamentally undermined the independence of the judiciary and fair trial guarantees,” it said.
In Russia, various administrative punishments are arbitrarily applied against dissidents. In addition, force is used against peaceful protesters.
This report is the first time in its 16 years of existence that the Human Rights Council has received a mandate to review the rights of one of the members of the so-called “five” who hold permanent seats in the Security Council.
We remind you that EU High Representative Josep Borrell said that Russia is abandoning the UN Charter in its war against Ukraine.
