Russia is preventing the Security Council from fulfilling its role, not only in Ukraine but everywhere, which is a threat to the integrity of the entire United Nations system.
Russia is violating the UN Charter with its war against Ukraine. EU High Representative Josep Borrell announced this on Sunday, September 17, in his blog, Ukrinform reports.
He noted that at the organization’s General Assembly, the European Union will call for reform and re-emphasize its support for Ukraine.
“In its aggressive war against Ukraine, Russia, which is a nuclear state and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is violating the UN Charter. Despite repeated calls for accountability from the General Assembly, the Russia is the Security Council to fulfill its role, not only in Ukraine, but everywhere, which is a threat to the reliability of the entire United Nations system,” he said.
Borrell noted that the Russian Federation has launched a war against the world’s largest breadbasket, created a threat to global food security, and exacerbated the global crisis of rising living costs.
“It affects all the countries of the world, especially the weakest and poorest of them. In August 2022, the UN played a decisive role in reducing the severity of the problem by launching the Black Sea Grain Initiative. But in July , Russia has decided to abandon this agreement. The EU intends to talk to the Secretary General. UN Guterres on ways and means to revive this agreement,” Borrell wrote.
He said he would call on other countries to continue helping Ukraine.
“We cannot go back to a world where “one can do right.” The imperative must be security for all states, large and small, especially for developing states,” Borrell emphasized.
Earlier, the media reported that the EU will create a fund to support the Ukrainian army. This initiative will not provide direct payments from the EU for weapons for Ukraine, but will help countries cover their own costs for the purchase of ammunition and equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said of resources.
At the same time, the initiative complements the EU’s proposal to allocate 50 billion euros to Ukraine for non-military aid in the period from 2024 to 2027.
