All six pillars of the Brandenburg Gate were destroyed, emergency services rushed to the scene, and law enforcement officers detained 13 people.
Activists from the environmental group Last Generation painted the Brandenburg Gate – one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks – orange on Sunday morning as part of another protest against fossil fuel extraction, Bild reported.
Last Generation said Berlin’s action was part of an open protest that began this week demanding that the German federal government phase out gas, oil and coal by 2030.
“The protest sends a message: It’s time for a change in politics: From fossil fuels to justice,” the activists said.
A Berlin police spokesman told reporters that as a result of the Last Generation’s action, all six pillars of the Brandenburg Gate were damaged, and emergency services rushed to the scene. According to Bild, law enforcement officials detained 13 people.
The action was condemned by Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner, who noted that the activists’ actions were not a legitimate protest, but illegal damage to property and a criminal offense. The representative of the Greens in the Bundestag, Tarek Masalme, also joined the criticism, noting that the action “undermines the climate movement.”
The Last Generation group, with its many actions, is demanding more decisive action from the German government to fight climate change. But their protests drew mixed reactions from the public.
Let’s remember that the German police conducted searches in several states in the apartments of environmental activists from the Last Generation movement fighting for climate protection.
