A lover of exotic turtle food faces prison; he is suspected of two charges: stealing the property of others and cruelty to animals.
In Odessa, the police reported suspicion of a 40-year-old man who stole a turtle to make soup for himself, the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odessa region wrote on September 17.
In July of this year, the suspect allegedly discovered two red-eared freshwater turtles belonging to a neighbor on the shared veranda. The wife steals an animal and prepares a strange dish from it, after breaking the shell with a hammer in the kitchen.
The owner of the turtles complained to the police about the disappearance of his pet. Law enforcement officers were able to identify the attacker, find out the circumstances of the crime and find material evidence.
The man is suspected of secretly stealing other people’s property, as well as cruelty to an animal, which led to death (part 4 of article 185 and part 1 of article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
“According to the penalties of these articles, the maximum punishment a man faces is imprisonment for up to eight years. The investigation is ongoing,” said Anastasia Chernenko, deputy head of the investigation department of the territorial police unit.
