From Sunday, September 17, Wales became the first in the United Kingdom to introduce a speed limit in densely populated areas – mainly urban areas – of up to 20 mph (32 km/h), up from the previous 30, reports the BBC.
In Wales, the new road speed limit will affect around 35% of roads where lampposts are located within 200 yards (183 metres) of each other.
Welsh authorities have explained that the speed limit will reduce the number of road accidents, road deaths, noise and pollution, and encourage more people to walk and cycle.
More people were killed or seriously injured in 30mph zones in Wales than in zones with other speed limits in 2022, official figures show.
And of the 1,014 people killed or seriously injured on Welsh roads last year, more than 40% were hit on sections of road with a 30mph speed limit.
To implement the initiative, Wales will spend £32.5 million, mainly on replacing road signs. But it is said to save £92 million a year, which is spent on treating road traffic victims.
The UN, environmental groups and road safety associations are calling for a speed limit of 20mph. At the same time, the Conservatives, who are in opposition in Wales, said the decision infringed on driving licences.
Additionally, in a survey commissioned by the Welsh government, the majority of respondents did not support a 20mph road limit.
In the rest of Britain, such speed limits have existed since at least 1991, but individual localities have introduced them.
Let’s remember that in the first four months of 2023, almost 7 thousand road accidents occurred in Ukraine, in which 852 people died – this figure exceeds the same data for 2021.
