Russian pharmacists said that the last time this drug was given in pharmacies was in June of this year.

A shortage of the drug Prozac, used to treat depression, has occurred in Russian pharmacies. The pro-government Russian news agency RBC reported this in connection with data from the online pharmacy aggregator Megapteka on Saturday, September 16.

The media noted that on September 15, Prozac was available only at four of the nearly 2.4 thousand points connected to the service in Moscow. In addition, in St. Petersburg, the drug is available in two of the 1.3 thousand pharmacies connected to it. In Voronezh – in five out of 346. At the same time, as in Novosibirsk and Kazan, there are no medicines anywhere.

Pharmacists from four Moscow pharmacy chains confirmed the absence of the drug. Pharmacy workers told the publication that there was no medicine in stock. The last supply was in June, and when the next one will be is unknown. The Russian Ministry of Health also confirmed that the last batch of Prozac was sold at the end of June.

A source at a large federal pharmacy chain said the drug has been unavailable to suppliers for a long time and is now selling remnants.

The Association of Independent Pharmacies (including 220 organizations) spoke about the lack of medicine from suppliers.

Prozac (also known as fluoxetine, Sarafem) was developed by the American pharmaceutical company Elli Lilly in the 1970s.

It is prescribed for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa.

At the end of the 1980s, the drug entered the US market and quickly gained popularity. It did not cause side effects, especially from the cardiovascular system, as a result of which the drug can be taken for a long time.

As we have already written, the Russian Ministry of Health has sent a list of 196 drugs to state hospitals that will soon disappear from the Russian market. Some of them have no analogues in the Russian Federation.
