Russian General Surovikin appears in photographs in Africa, where Wagner’s mercenaries are present.
The former commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) Sergei Surovikin, who was fired due to connections with the Wagner PMC, arrived in Algeria with a delegation from the Russian Ministry of Defense. The Russian publication Kommersant reported this on September 15.
The interlocutors of the publication connected Surovikin’s trip to this African country with the fact that “the military-political leadership of the country attaches great importance to the eastern direction in the implementation of foreign policy.”
The media also suggest that Surovikin may be assigned to a job-related position in the eastern direction.
Let’s recall that in October 2022 – January 2023, Surovikin led a joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine, and from January 11, 2023, he served as deputy commander.
The general, considered an ally of the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, disappeared from the public sphere in June of this year after the mercenary leader and members of his company spoke out against the Russian military leadership. Surovikin was detained and released a few days after Prigozhin died in a plane crash.
Surovikin’s biography has disappeared from the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense. His resignation from the post of commander of the Russian Military Space Forces was not officially reported; in August it was reported by the media related sources.
On September 11, Surovikin was appointed to a new position, he headed the Coordination Committee for Air Defense under the Council of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
