The war against Ukraine is a strategic failure for Russia. This opinion was expressed on September 13 by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a speech at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

According to him, threats to international order are not limited to one region or another, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine demonstrated that an attack in one place on the planet will harm people everywhere.
We helped build the international order after World War II and invested in the progress of other nations and people because we recognize that doing so will serve the interests of humanity as well as our own,” Blinken said.
The head of the US State Department noted that “supporting the success of others” will ultimately enhance prosperity, peace and security for Americans. He stressed that Washington will cooperate not only with like-minded democracies, but also with those “with which it disagrees on important issues” if they seek to “contribute to common problems and support international norms.”
I call this diplomatic variable geometry. We start with the problem we need to solve. And we’re working to assemble a group of partners,” Blinken said.
As an example, he cited the partnership that formed around helping Ukraine resist Russian aggression.
We have brought our transatlantic and Indo-Pacific allies closer together to protect our shared security, prosperity and freedom, Blinken said.
After Russia cut off oil and gas supplies to Europe, Japan and Korea joined American efforts to help, in part with liquefied natural gas reserves. Now, Blinken emphasized, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand are regular and active participants in NATO meetings. European countries, Canada and others have joined allies and partners in Asia to jointly resist China’s economic pressure. Together, allies are also working to develop sustainable supply chains, especially when it comes to key technologies, the secretary of state says.
Our goal is for Ukraine not just to survive, but to thrive as a vibrant, successful democracy,” Blinken said.
In his opinion, thanks to the extreme courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people and support from partners, “Putin’s war continues to be a strategic failure of Russia.”
Ukrainians can write their own future, Blinken emphasized.
