In particular, the issue of education in the languages of national minorities in Ukrainian schools will be discussed, said the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.
Ukraine will hold talks with Hungary and Romania to unblock EU accession negotiations. In particular, the issue of education in the languages of national minorities in Ukrainian schools will be discussed. This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna, writes the Financial Times.
Stefanishyna believes that Ukraine is ready to make “further changes” in the policies of secondary education in minority languages, in particular Hungarian, but while achieving a balance in Ukrainian education.
This issue has reportedly been the biggest potential obstacle to the start of negotiations.
Stefanishyna noted that Ukraine is ready to make changes to the law.
“We will make changes to the law on national minorities, and we can make further changes if necessary, but first we have to negotiate,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
At the same time, Stefanishyna mentioned that Ukrainians belonging to ethnic minorities need to be adequately taught the Ukrainian language so that they can continue their studies or work outside the territories where these minorities live.
Meanwhile, officials in Kyiv and Brussels fear that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is not really interested in solving the education problem and is using it as an excuse to block the start of negotiations.
It was previously reported that the European Union is preparing a “major proposal” for expansion.
