Lula da Silva believes that the G20 summit is not the right place to discuss the war in Ukraine; the UN General Assembly is more suitable for this.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wants to “bring to the negotiation table” the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Vladimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, at the UN General Assembly. He said this in an interview with the Indian press, CNN reports.
“We will have the United Nations General Assembly on September 19. This is a place to discuss war. This is a place to discuss peace. This is a place to bring Putin and Zelensky to the negotiating table,” said Lula da Silva .
The Brazilian leader recalled that the G20 was created after the 2008 crisis and contributed to the discussion of economic issues, the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Bank and the IMF. “Therefore, we do not believe that here in India it is an ideal place to discuss war,” the politician said.
Lula da Silva reiterated that his Brazil “will not be drawn into war” but intends to attend peace negotiations.
Let’s recall that on September 9, G20 members adopted a joint declaration following the summit in India. The document calls for compliance with the principles of international law, especially the territorial integrity and sovereignty of nations, and also mentions the unacceptable use of nuclear weapons.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said the organization had “nothing to be proud of” in terms of the G20 communiqué on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The spokesman of the ministry, Sergei Nikolov, showed what, in the opinion of Ukraine, these points should look like. For example, he corrected the phrase “war in Ukraine” to “war against Ukraine,” and “Ukraine crisis” to “Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.”
