CNN reports this.
The identified man and woman are the 1648 and 1649 victims identified by the US Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. They were identified through in-depth analysis of DNA remains:
- the man was identified through DNA tests of remains seized in 2001;
- woman – using DNA tests on remains seized in 2001, 2006 and 2013.
It is noted that for identification, in particular, they used “recently adopted next-generation sequencing technology,” which is more sensitive and faster than conventional DNA analysis methods.
The New York City mayor’s office said it was hiding the names of two new victims at the request of their families. This is the first time victims have been identified since September 2021.
Despite advances in DNA testing, approximately 40% of the victims, or about 1,100 people, believed to have died in the disaster remain unrecognized.
A total of 2,753 people are reported missing in lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center. All of them have been issued death certificates, although work continues to identify the dead from the recovered remains.
Let us remember that in addition to the direct victims of terrorist attacks, the tragedy of September 11 continued to claim lives for decades – combustion products resulting from fires led to the development of cancer in rescuers and police officers who worked at the sites of these incidents.
