As a result of the investigation, 17 people have been arrested so far, including the organizer of this activity,” the agency quotes a statement from Interior Ministry Colonel Cesar Rodriguez.
The names of those arrested were not disclosed, but the Cuban Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that the leader of the group was blamed on two people—residents of the island. They helped him recruit Cubans to participate in hostilities on the side of the aggressor country, Russia.
Earlier this week, Cuban authorities reported the discovery of a human trafficking ring that forced Cuban citizens to fight for Russia in Ukraine. The scheme to recruit into the Russian army concerned both Cubans living in Russia and those who were in Cuba.
Prosecutor Jose Luis Reyes said members of the criminal network could face up to 30 years in prison, life imprisonment or execution, depending on the severity and nature of the crimes committed.
