Those detained face up to 30 years in prison, life in prison or the death penalty, the local prosecutor’s office said.
Cuba has arrested 17 people involved in a network that recruited young men to fight with the Russian army against Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters on Friday, September 8.
It was noted that local authorities are working to “neutralize and eliminate” the network, which operates both on Cuban soil and in Russia.
“As a result of the investigation, 17 people were arrested, among them the internal organizer of this activity,” said Colonel Cesar Rodriguez of the Cuban Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to him, the leader of the group relied on two people living on the island to recruit Cubans to the Russian army for the war in Ukraine.
Prosecutor Jose Luis Reyes said those detained could face up to 30 years in prison, life imprisonment or the death penalty. It depends on the severity and type of crimes, from human trafficking to participating in combat as mercenaries.
Earlier, the Cuban Foreign Ministry announced the discovery of a human trafficking network, whose participants forced the country’s citizens to fight in Ukraine on the side of Russia.
Let’s recall that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Russia should stop recruiting Serbs to participate in the battles on the side of the Wagner PMC in Ukraine.
