Atlanta (AP)-Georgia officials have arrested an 18-year-old man who, they say, threatened to kill the sheriff and his wife for the arrests of rappers Young Thug and Gunna and others pa.
Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat, who would be the target of the threat, announced the arrest Friday. Records show Quartavius Mender was arrested last week in Fulton County Jail on suspicion of terrorist threats. He was detained without bail. It is not clear if Mender has a lawyer in his area.
Local media reported that Mender threatened to kill Labat, his wife Jack and the Atlanta School District Police Chief on various social media pages if they did not release the young Tug, whose legal name is Jeffrey Williams.
“#Freethug or Imma sh00t you and your spouse,” Mender wrote under the discussed Atlantis Journal-Constitution arrest warrant. He allegedly wrote on the sheriff’s Instagram page a few hours later and said, “I will kill you.”
Among the 28 people accused in the racketeering case is Tenkvarius Mender. On Friday it was not yet known whether he and Kvartavius were related to Mender.
“We take this type of threat seriously,” Labat said in a statement. “Cyberbullying on social media and hiding behind a keyboard will not protect anyone from prosecution.”
Officials said Young Thug led the Young Slime Life gang, arresting him and 27 others on a broad indictment filed under Georgia’s State Racket Act. He accuses gang members of being involved in murders, shootings, vehicle theft and other crimes.
Young Tug was fired Thursday after a Fulton County judge expressed “significant concern” about his return home under arrest.
Prosecutors said they would offer plea bargaining in exchange for the testimony of some of the defendants, but said some witnesses had already been threatened.
“Our witnesses in this case were threatened with violence, extreme violence and death,” Fulton District Attorney Don Gerry said.
Young Arch’s lawyers have certainly denied that he was involved in a crime.
