Ukraine is considering the possibility of applying to the WTO for possible restrictions on the export of its agricultural products after September 15.
Ukraine may file a case against Brussels and EU member states at the World Trade Organization (WTO) if they do not remove restrictions on the export of its agricultural products after September 15. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Economy – Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka in an interview with Politico.
“With full respect and gratitude to Poland, if any ban is introduced after September 15, Ukraine will file a case against Poland and the EU at the World Trade Organization,” the official insisted.
According to him, these restrictions violate the Free Trade Agreement implemented between Ukraine and the EU since 2014.
“We do not intend to immediately take retaliatory measures, because of the spirit of friendship and solidarity between Ukraine and the EU,” Kachka explained.
However, a systemic threat to Ukrainian interests will force Ukraine to refer this case to the WTO, he said.
The trade representative added that there was no evidence of price deviations or significant increases in grain supplies to justify the extension of import restrictions. Kyiv has engaged in “constructive cooperation” with the European Commission, five EU members, and Moldova, a major transit hub for Ukrainian exports to the EU.
“We have received significant support to ensure better movement of goods through the territory of neighboring member countries, including Poland and Hungary. In the past two months, we have made significant progress in cooperation with Romania on the transportation of goods from Ukraine,” concluded Kachka.
Recall that Brussels proposes to allocate 600 million euros from the EU budget to subsidize the transit of Ukrainian grain to Europe.
It should be noted that in July Ukraine sent a record batch of grain along the Danube.
In May, the Danube ports handled more than 3 million tons, which is an absolute record for the ports of this region.
