A fire is raging in the unique Askania-Nova nature reserve in the Kherson region. It arose on September 1 due to a lightning strike, 1,790 hectares of the protected steppe burned down, according to satellite imagery.

The fauna of invertebrates and plant groups of hairy feather grass, listed in the Green Book of Ukraine, received the greatest defeat.
This is the seventh fire that has broken out in Askania-Nova since Russia’s full-scale invasion and temporary occupation. In total, the fire destroyed more than 3.5 thousand hectares of the reserve, Kherson OVA reports.
This is the second large-scale fire in Askania-Nova in the last two weeks. On August 22, 300 hectares of the protected steppe burned down there.
Then the Ministry of Environment reported that the Great Chapelsky Pod site was on fire. There are valuable wetlands there that need to be preserved and protected under the Ramsar Convention.
Askania-Nova has been under occupation since March 2022. It is still impossible to assess the damage caused by the Russians to the unique nature there.
