US Ambassador to Russia from 2011 to 2014 Michael McFaul believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is most afraid of losing Crimea. McFaul expressed this opinion in an interview with Espresso.TV.

He is afraid of transferring the war to the Crimea, to your country, not his. That’s what he fears the most, because it would undermine the legitimacy of his war in Russia, McFaul said.
According to the diplomat, Putin’s failure to keep Crimea would be “a threatening consequence for his regime.”
McFaul stressed that the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the BRICS summit instead of Putin testifies to the latter’s fear of being brought before the International Criminal Court in case of arrest.
We do not see a brave man who challenges the West, we see a coward who is afraid of the West. We must understand that Putin should not be feared and that we can boldly challenge him and eventually drive him away, the ambassador said.
McFaul also commented on the ambiguous attitude of the Chinese government towards Russia’s war against Ukraine.
I would be glad if China supported the West and condemned this war. But I don’t think it will happen. However, maintaining Chinese neutrality is a worthy goal that Ukrainian diplomacy has managed to achieve,” he said.
McFaul believes that Ukraine needs more and better weapons, as well as effective sanctions against Russia, to hasten the end of the war.
