The impeachment of Salome Zurabishvili requires the votes of 100 MPs. The ruling party has no such resources.
The ruling Georgian Dream party is launching impeachment proceedings against Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. This was announced by party leader Irakli Kobakhidze, Ekho Kavkaza reported on Friday, September 1.
According to him, the reason for this decision is the president’s visits to Europe, not coordination with the government.
Kobakhidze recalled that the impeachment of the president requires the votes of 100 deputies of the parliament, and the ruling party does not have such a resource without the votes of the radical opposition.
“Despite this, at a meeting of the political council of the party, we decided to start the procedure of impeachment of the President of Georgia. First of all, this is our responsibility to the Constitution of Georgia. Ignoring blatant violations of the Constitution is undermines the rule of law and the democratic constitutional system, which we do not allow,” Kobakhidze said.
In his opinion, the president’s visits are “counterproductive” and may prevent Georgia from obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership.
It is known that the Georgian government has not approved Zurabishvili’s foreign visits to 10 countries, including Ukraine. Despite this, he went to Berlin to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Today, he is scheduled to meet in Brussels with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
