From tomorrow, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switches to the New Julian calendar. In this regard, the dates of some holidays will change. The dates of fixed holidays, fasts, community members, days of remembrance of saints will be shifted 13 days ago. Thus, they will be celebrated 13 days earlier. She reported about the HCU on Facebook.
Consequently, Ukrainian believers will celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos on September 8, and not September 21. The Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord is on September 14, and not on September 27, the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is on October 1, and not on October 14. The Advent fast will last from November 15 to December 24, while Christmas itself will be celebrated on December 25.
The HCU added that in 2024 Peter’s fast will not be universal, because Holy Pentecost will be celebrated on June 23, and the day of the holy chief apostles Peter and Paul on June 29. There will also not be a fixed period of fasting that must begin a week after Trinity. For those wishing to fast in other local churches, the period after the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul can be taken for fasting – from July 1 to July 5.
Lent will last from March 18 to May 4. Easter in 2024 is celebrated on May 5th. This date is common for those who adhere to the Julian, and for those who live according to the New Julian calendar. The Holy Trinity will also be celebrated without changes in the calendar.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine noted that the local council retained the right to use the old (Julian) calendar for parishes and monasteries that wish to do so.
Recall that on July 27, the local council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine confirmed the transition from the Julian to the New Julian calendar, known as the “new style”. The transition to the new church calendar will take place from September 1, 2023.
