Drone strike in Pskov: ISW tells why Russian air defense didn’t work

Russia may have focused its air defenses on covering Moscow, which is why it missed the drone attack on Pskov, analysts said.

The Ukrainian strike on an airport in the Pskov region indicates that the Russian air defense is not adapted to defend against Ukrainian drone attacks, unlike the air defense in Crimea. This was stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for August 30.

It was noted that Ukrainian forces destroyed four Russian Il-76 aircraft in a drone strike on an airport in the Pskov region on the night of August 29-30. In general, ISW wrote in relation to Russian data, more than twenty Ukrainian drones tried to attack this airport.

“Russian sources, especially in the Russian Ministry of Defense, said that the air defense and electronic warfare system also shot down Ukrainian drones in the regions of Oryol, Tula, Voronezh, Ryazan, Kaluga, Bryansk and Moscow, ” said the report.

So, the ISW speculates, Russian forces may have focused their air defenses on the cover for Moscow and somehow missed the unusually large number of Ukrainian drones that hit the Pskov airfield.

In addition, analysts note growing concern in the Russian Federation that there are no safe areas in the west of the country due to Ukraine’s growing technical capabilities.

Recall that on the night of August 30, Russia announced a massive attack by “Ukrainian drones”. Air defense forces apparently shot down targets in six regions.

In particular, as a result of the “raid”, a fire broke out at the Pskov airport, where Il-76 aircraft were deployed. Ukrainian intelligence reported that four Il-76 military aircraft were destroyed at the airport in Pskov.
