Ankara, Turkey (AP) – Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşo ლ lu has sent a letter to the UN requesting that his country be called “Turkey,” the state news agency reports. The move is seen as part of Ankara’s quest to change the country’s name and its name comes from some of the negative connotations of bird, turkey and so on.
The Anadolu news agency reported that Stefan Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, confirmed that the letter was received late Wednesday. The agency quoted Dujarric as saying the name change took effect “from the moment the letter was received”.
The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is calling on Turkey to change the name recognized worldwide to “Türkiye” (Turkish-YAY), as it is written and pronounced in Turkish. In 1923, after the declaration of independence, the country was called “Türkiye”.
In December, Erdogan ordered the use of “Türkiye” to better represent Turkish culture and values, including the use of “Made in Turk” instead of “Made in Türkiye” in exported products. Turkish ministries began to use “Türkiye” in official documents.
Earlier this year, the government also released a promotional video as part of an attempt to change its name to English. The video shows tourists from all over the world saying “Hi Türkiye” to popular destinations.
The Turkish president’s communications directorate said it had launched a campaign “to promote the more effective use of Turkey as a national and international platform among international platforms”.
It is not clear whether this name, with letters not in the English alphabet, will be widely used abroad. In 2016, the Czech Republic officially registered its abbreviated name, Czech Republic, and although it is used by some international institutions, many still refer to the country by its longer name.
Turkish English-language state broadcaster TRT World has moved to “Türkiye”, but the word “Turkey” reflects journalists who are still trying to adapt to the change.
TRT World explained the decision in an article earlier this year, stating that “Turkey” on Google features “a chaotic collection of images, articles and dictionaries that unify the country in meleagris – otherwise man is known as turkey, a large native bird.North America – known for Christmas menus or Thanksgiving dinners.
