An adopted child from birth and his biological mother have been looking at each other for years and discovered that they have never been apart.
Benjamin Hulberg and Holly Shearer quickly learned in the first meeting that they worked at the same hospital in Salt Lake City.
“It’s … hard to describe,” Hulberg told HuffPost via Facebook, finally meeting his biological mother and discovering their closeness. “Very quiet and relaxing, but like crazy.”
Shearer is a medical assistant at HCA Healthcare St. Mark’s Hospital’s Heart Center. Hulberg volunteered in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
“Every morning I come from the women’s pavilion to work,” Shearer said. “Good morning America” Up Tuesday. “So I went to the NICU every day. We stopped in the same garage, we were on the same floor, we had no idea we were that close.
Shearer was 15 years old when she gave birth to a son. She began looking for adoptive parents six months after her pregnancy, for fear that she would not be able to provide the desired life for her child.
Angela and Brian Hulberg adopted Benjamin on his birthday, Thanksgiving 2001. The couple was open with Benjamin about his adoption and regularly talked to him about a biological mother they only knew as Hall.
“We knew Holly loved Benjamin from the day she gave him to us,” Angela Hulberg told the Salt Lake City News Channel. KSL. “She loved him with all her heart and soul.”
Benjamin Hulberg said in a Facebook post in November that he has always had a “deep desire to get to know my birth mother” and has been looking for her for years.
He “wrote letters to adoption agencies in Utah, underwent DNA testing and registered on the adoption registry,” he wrote in November 2021. “none.”
He didn’t even know that Shearer had already found him on social media, while searching on Google. She watched it from afar for years, before falling in November – two days before her son’s twentieth birthday – and texted him on Facebook.
“You don’t know me,” Shearer began his message, which was shown on GMA and KSAL. “20 years ago I made the hardest decision of my life and raised a beautiful family to adopt my beautiful baby boy.
Shearer said in his message that “it won’t take your life back”, but he wanted her to know that “you think every day.”
“I finally had the courage to send him a message to wish him a happy birthday,” he wrote.
Benjamin Hulberg was shocked.
“I remember where I was when I got the message,” he told GMA. “I’m at work. I’m a car operator and I remember I was in a car №15. I was in our hourly quality check and I called on the phone, I saw your message and I just answered” .
Benjamin Hulberg told Shearer he wanted to meet right away and the next day they would have dinner with the two families. On November 21, 2021, they finally got together.
“I have no words to describe how I felt when I met a woman who gave birth 20 years ago,” Benjamin Hulberg wrote on Facebook. “My roots. My DNA. I’ve never had anything like this in my life. Another funny fact? I received it on the 20th of November. National Adoption Day”.
At their meeting, Benjamin Hulberg also met his two paternal brothers and learned that he and Shearer worked at the same hospital.
After that, he started visiting Shearer while they were at work, he told GMA.
“Can I sit with my biological mother and have coffee and talk before I go to the shift-based NICU?” “It’s great,” he said.
Benjamin Hulberg told HuffPost that they lived together from January to April, which he said was “wonderful”. He said he was about to move Logan, Utah, for school.
