Along with these platforms, Serpent’s Island is also strategically important. They are used as forward bases for troops. That is why Ukraine and the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, are fighting for them. This was announced on August 27 by the British Ministry of Defense on Twitter.
As tensions in the Black Sea remain high, there have been skirmishes between sea and air forces around strategically important gas and oil platforms between Crimea and Odessa, the agency noted.
British intelligence stressed that the Boyko and Zmeiny towers can be used as forward deployment bases, helicopter landing sites and long-range missile systems.
As you know, the so-called Boyko rigs are drilling platforms 100 km from Odessa and 150 km from Crimea. In 2014, Russia seized these Ukrainian facilities. In addition to gas production, the invaders also use them to monitor the surface situation with the help of electronic intelligence.
Recall that recently in the territorial waters of Ukraine near the island of Serpents and in the area of the “Boyko towers” a battle took place between a Ukrainian boat and a Russian fighter. The plane of the occupiers tried to attack the Ukrainian military vessels, but received a return missile.
