Reuters reported on August 23 that purchases for this amount took place from May 2022 to June this year.
Among the purchases are important parts, in particular the devices of the American company Northrop Grumman, cabin pressure valves, chassis, as well as simple spare parts – coffee makers and toilet seats.
Northrop Grumman said it did not find any services provided to companies from Russia. They say they have “robust processes and procedures in place to help ensure compliance with all laws and regulations related to exports and sanctions.”
According to the agency, components enter Russia through intermediaries in countries such as Tajikistan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, China and Kyrgyzstan. Reuters notes that none of these countries supported Western sanctions against Russia.
Reuters writes that in order to supply spare parts to circumvent sanctions, Russian air carriers, which had cooperated with large international companies before the war, began to choose less visible firms as partners. In particular, S7 buys components from the Moldovan Air Rock Solutions. In total, over the past 14 months, the company has supplied spare parts to Russia for at least $1.23 million.
In turn, the air carrier Nordwind took advantage of family ties for the purchase, the agency’s journalists say. The airline, owned by Karina Boukrei, imported parts through Ramses Turizm, a Turkish business owned by male entrepreneur Ramazan Akpinar.
At first there was a shock, no one knew what to do. After two or three months, new supply channels were found, and after six to nine months, many alternatives appeared, which made it possible to reduce prices and delivery times,” Oleg Panteleev, head of the AviaPort aviation analytical center, commented on the situation to Reuters.
Another way is to buy used parts from “friendly countries”. Yes, despite the sanctions, Ural Airlines Airbus received an important spare part manufactured by the American company Northrop Grumman.
The serial number indicates that the part was manufactured in October 2008. It was used on various aircraft, including in Saudi Arabia six years ago.
