Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted from power in a military coup in 2006 and fled the country. Despite this, the man remained an influential figure in Thai politics.
Thailand jails former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra after 15 years in exile. It was reported on August 22 by BBC News.
The politician arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday morning in a private jet ahead of the polls for the country’s next head of government. He was greeted by hundreds of loyal fans.
The 74-year-old politician was taken straight from the airport to the country’s Supreme Court, where he was sentenced to eight years in prison on what he said were politically motivated charges. The ex-premier was then taken to prison.
Shinawatra’s Pheu Thai party is expected to be part of the new coalition government. Therefore, many believe that he entered into a deal where he will only serve a short time in prison and continue his career.
Despite his absence from Thailand, Thaksin remained an important figure in the country’s politics.
Remember that as prime minister he was very popular, especially among the rural poor. After more than five years in power, he was ousted in a military coup in September 2006, accused of corruption and abuse.
Since then, Shinawatra has been in self-imposed exile, mostly in London or Dubai.
