The parties identified the main areas of joint work, including safety assessment of new projects of nuclear installations.
The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission signed a memorandum of cooperation. This was announced on August 21 by the SINR press service.
It is noted that the document is signed by act. Heads of the State Nuclear Regulatory Commission – Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleg Korikov and President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Rumina Welshi.
In addition, the parties discussed a number of promising areas of cooperation in which the Canadian regulator has significant experience, in particular, in the field of licensed safety assessment of new nuclear installation projects (small modular reactors).
The second important area of work is regulatory activities for the decommissioning of mining and processing facilities in the uranium industry.
Also, Ukraine and Canada will work on the issues of restoring the safe operation of the temporarily occupied Zaporozhye NPP and other nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities affected by the war, and on improving regulatory activities for radioactive management waste.
Recall that in April Energoatom and the American company Holtec International signed an agreement on the construction in Ukraine of up to 20 nuclear power units with small modular reactors SMR-160.
