The delegation began its work in Niger by meeting with the rebels, led by General Abdurahman Tchiani.
Members of a delegation from the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) arrived in Niger’s capital, Niamey, and met with ousted President Mohamed Bazum. RFI radio station reported this on Saturday, August 19.
According to him, the meeting with Bazum, in particular, was attended by the former president of Nigeria, General Abdusalami Abubakar, who headed the delegation, as well as the head of the government formed by the rebels, Ali Lamine Zein.
It is said that no serious discussion took place at the meeting, and ECOWAS representatives first came to familiarize themselves with the conditions of the president’s detention. The meeting lasted 10 minutes.
The delegation began its work in Niger by meeting with the rebels, led by General Abdurahman Tchiani. Members of the delegation called on the putschists to restore constitutional order in the country.
Earlier, the media reported that the commanders of the ECOWAS countries agreed on a date for a possible military invasion of Niger. This decision was made following the results of a two-day meeting in the capital of Ghana, the city of Accra.
It will be recalled that on July 26, part of Niger’s Presidential Guard opposed President Mohammed Bazum. He was captured and removed from power.
