Members of the ECOWAS bloc are planning an intervention to restore democracy in Niger, where a coup has taken place.
The commanders of the West African countries (ECOWAS bloc) have agreed on a date for a possible military invasion of Niger due to a coup d’état in that country. On Friday, August 18, Reuters reported.
It will be noted that such a decision was made after a two-day meeting in Ghana’s capital, Accri.
A meeting of the Economic Community of West African states discussed possible intervention to restore democracy in Niger. One of the participants in the meeting in the city of Accra said that if diplomatic efforts are unsuccessful, the use of armed force may be necessary.
In this regard, the head of the ECOWAS department for political affairs and security, Abdel-Fatou Moussah, emphasized that they are ready to comply with the order to intervene immediately. The plans and circumstances of a possible operation were discussed in detail at the summit of allied states, however, it was noted that there is still hope to reach peace agreements with the authorities in Niger, because “the doors for negotiations remain open.”
It will be recalled that on July 26, part of the Niger presidential guard opposed President Mohammed Bazum. He was captured and removed from power.
Army General Abdurahman Tchiani was declared as the new leader of the country.
