The CBS report partly contrasts with the recent Washington Post material, in which a number of Western experts suggested that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would not be able to fire the strategically important Tokmok and Melitopol before the end of autumn.
Ukrainian military information CBS has not yet commented.
At the same time, a U.S. official told CBS News on Thursday that Ukrainian troops had broken through a Russian minefield north of Tokmok and were now engaging the Russian first line of defense holding the city.
Retaking cities like Tokmok and pushing further into occupied Melitopol will be a difficult task for Ukraine’s defenders. However, Melitopol is a gateway to the temporarily occupied Crimea and a vital Russian transit hub.
Recall, The Washington Post wrote that American intelligence believes that the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine before the cold snap will not achieve its key goals – the dismissal of Melitopol, because even regaining control over intermediate Tokmok is a difficult task, where the invaders have built three lines of defense.
